Dr Nick Orr
Dr Nick Orr and his team at Queen’s University Belfast are conducting research into the causes of male breast cancer. They are particularly interested in how inherited genetic changes influence the development of the disease. Nick has a degree in molecular biology and a PhD in genetics from Queen’s. He also trained in statistics at University College London. He undertook post-doctoral research training in cancer genetic epidemiology at the US National Cancer Institute before joining the Institute of Cancer Research in London in 2008, where he established his own independent research group. He moved back to Queen’s in 2017 as Reader in Cancer Genetics at the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research. He is co-lead of a newly established international male breast cancer genetics consortium called Merge that is currently performing an analysis of 5,000 men to identify new regions of the genome that are associated with the disease. His research into male breast cancer genetics is supported by funding from Breast Cancer Now.
